A Heavy Fabric

HEADLINE

A school uniform may look like just a shirt and a pair of pants, but for some families, it carries a much heavier cost. As a student, I know that uniforms are part of school life, but not every family has enough money to easily buy new sets when needed. For families already dealing with daily expenses and debts, a uniform can become another burden to carry.

Uniforms are not always cheap, especially when students need more than one set. There are also costs for shoes, socks, school supplies, and other needs that come with going to school. What may seem like a small expense to some can already take a large part of a family’s budget.

I understand that uniforms help students look neat and make it easier to identify who belongs in the school. However, being unable to buy or replace a uniform does not mean a student does not care about school. Some students simply come from families who are doing their best to provide food, transportation, and education at the same time.

Every morning, students are met by Prefect of Discipline officers checking their outfits. Those with incomplete uniforms are left confused and stressed, feeling that a simple uniform rule is getting in the way of their education. If you forget to wash your only uniform set after coming home, you could already be in trouble the next morning. There should also be consideration for students whose families are struggling financially.

Education should not feel like another debt that families have to carry just to keep their children in school. Schools should look for ways to lessen the burden, such as allowing reasonable alternatives or providing support for students who cannot afford uniforms. A uniform should help students feel part of the school, not become a heavy fabric that pulls them down.
